Hey there gorgeous,
It’s a quick post today as I am swamped with all things course related, but I just had an interesting conversation that I wanted to share with you.
I was talking with someone about having consistency in their Instagram Main grid, and, being a creative type, they were having trouble coming at the idea. They wanted to be able to show all the things in their Main grid. But I really do caution against this, and for good reason.
Your Instagram Main grid (and these days your Reels grid too) is an extension of your branding materials. In fact everything you do on Instagram is a representative for your brand. But for now we’re focusing on your Main grids posts.
You should think just as much about how it looks on a whole as you do about what business cards you get made, the paper you use to wrap your products with, what your website looks like, and honestly, what your product itself looks like.
Now here’s the thing.
Your Instagram page is viewed for literal seconds, if not milliseconds, before someone decides whether or not to follow you. You have so, so little time to capture their attention and give them a reason to follow you. And if at a glance what you post is all over the shot, what are you telling that prospective follower?
You are telling them that they can’t know exactly what to expect if they follow you.
They might get inspirational pottery one day, and images from a rave party the next. And someone who wants pics of pretty pots in their feed, more than likely does not want pictures at raves. And vice versa. If it’s not immediately obvious what you have to give, your prospective follower has no idea whether it’s worthwhile following you in the future and is more likely than not to simply move on, without hitting that follow button.
And here’s the other thing, like it or not, when you have an inconsistent feed you are inadvertently making potential followers feel like they can’t easily trust you. If you are unpredictable with your feed, you might be unpredictable with other things. Like actually sending them what they pay for when they go to buy from you.
“Persistent, consistent, and frequent stories, delivered to an aligned audience, will earn attention, trust, and action.”
― Seth Godin
Consistency breeds trust. It’s a simple but really powerful force in marketing.
It’s not always easy to do when you are a creative type, but I promise you, having a consistent aesthetic on Instagram will make all the difference in your likes, shares, follows, and ultimately sales.
